Power Mac G4 Review (2016)

An old review of my Power Mac G4, as part of the short-lived Computer Cellar series. (Not affiliated with North Carolina-based Computer Cellar)

Description

What you’re watching is my first “professional” computer review of the Power Macintosh G4, originally uploaded on May 13th, 2016.

This was my first attempt at doing a computer review similar to Computer Clan’s “Vintage Apple Tours”, but with the intent of expanding it beyond Macs; I ultimately did do a few PC reviews later on, but that wasn’t the main focus at the time.

While the editing can be considered acceptable, the video quality is…not that great. At the time, I used a Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS, my first digital camera I owned, and my video setup was in a cubicle-like area that I’ve since expanded into a office/studio setup.

On top of that, the computer was DIRTY—I’ve since cleaned it up when I did my Savvy Sage episode on it, but man, did it look filthy. I’ve also since made some upgrades to it, including a Rage 128 Pro graphics card (which has a DVI port on it), and a SuperDrive (salvaged from another scrapped G4) replacing the original DVD drive, now in one of my Dell PCs.

Finally, there’s the research: This was before I had fail-safe methods put in place and before I started relying more on multiple sources instead of just one—the most notable correction I made in the Savvy Sage episode was to provide more information on the revisions for the original G4 models, such as the processor speed bump coming AFTER the revisions with the upgraded graphics card.

Anyways, unless you want to get nostalgic—do me a favor and watch the Savvy Sage episode on the Power Mac G4 instead.
